Bombay Gnanam is a name who represents the earliest woman participation in the Tamil stage and theatre shows. A passionate dreamer of a career in acting since her childhood, she joined the Tamil theater bandwagon back in 1980. She was deeply inspired by a report on minimal participation of woman in Tamil theatre and established her own all woman theatre group called Mahalakshmi Ladies Drama Group in 1989. Since then she has paved her way through theatre, stage shows, television serials and films.
Over 20 serials, including some famous ones like ‘Kolangal’ and ‘
’ are in her credit. ‘
’ was her debut in the TV serial industry in which she worked with veteran industry giant K. Balachander. She has also acted in some famous movies, but her first love remains to be theatre. She is known for her theatre niche specially and her headstrong portrayals of pro woman roles and subjects. Her troupe Mahalakshmi Ladies Drama Group has recently completed its 25 years in the Tamil theatre world and is still prominent in raising pro woman causes through this eminent media.
She has been awarded ‘Kalaimamani’ award, which is given for excellence in the field of art and literature. She has many other awards in her credit such as Nataka Choodamani by Krishna Gana Sabha and Nataka Padmam by Brahma Gana Sabha. A mother of 2 sons and part of a happy family, she is quite relaxed and satisfied with her life. She desires to carve out some ways to make her shows reach to the rural masses; especially for woman. She has a desire to play it right for the woman rights again. She is definitely a flag bearer.
