Nirmala Sitharaman

Nirmala Sitharaman, the Defense Minister Of India, was born on 18th August 1959 in Madurai. Her father is Narayanan Sitharaman, and his roots are in Musiri in Trichy. Narayanan Sitharaman was a railway employee. Nirmala’s mother Savitri is from Thiruvenkadu, Salem district. Nirmala developed the reading habits from her mother Savitri and discipline from her father. Nirmala is an MP of Rajya Sabha from Karnataka. She had been the National Spokesperson for Bharatiya Janata Party. Nirmala had been the Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister under the Ministry of Finance.

She had also worked as the Commerce and Industry Minister, before taking charge as the Defense Minister Of India. Nirmala did her under graduation in Economics in Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College in Trichy and her Master degree in Economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi. Nirmala is married to Parakala Prabhakar from Narsapuram, Andhra Pradesh, whom she met while doing her MA in Delhi. Their marriage took place in 1986 and they shifted their base to the UK. They returned to India in 1991. Nirmala and Prabhakar settled in Hyderabad.

The couple has a daughter. Prabhakar’s family is the staunch Congress supporters and Nirmala joined BJP in 2008. Nirmala is the first woman to hold the office of the Defense Minister after Indira Gandhi and is the first full-time Defense Minister. Besides being a politician, Nirmala Sitharaman worked as an Assistant Economist in the UK. She had been the senior manager in R&D and also worked in the BBC World Service. Nirmala is one of the founder-directors of Pranava School that works in Hyderabad.
