She scored 94% in board exams. She studied B.Sc. in life science from IGNOU. Gayatri divided her time between modelling and education and thus also went on to study physiotherapy at SRM College in Chennai. She did her first modelling for local brands such as Nalli Silks, Kumaran Silks, Pothys and Chennai Silks. She also participated in the beauty pageants. She won the Miss Tamil Nadu title in October 1997 and later went on to win the title of Miss South India in 1998. Gayathri made it to the final stages of Femina Miss India 2000 after being selected among the 26 finalists from 8000 entries.

She reached the top 5, eventually securing the fourth position. She also worked as a video jockey on television. Gayathri started her acting career by starring in director K. Balachander's serial Azhukku Veshti. She debuted by featuring in Nagabharana's Neela. In May 2007, she married Samit Sawhney, an Indian entrepreneur and author, in the Andaman Islands in a private ceremony. After her wedding, she eventually retired from films. Gayathri is presently a scuba diving instructor in the Andaman Islands. She briefly returned to compete in the 2009 TV show The Chennai Super Kings Cheer Leaders talent show, which aired on Vijay TV.
