A S A Samy or Arul Soosai Anthony Samy was a Tamil film director and screenwriter. Samy was born in the year 1915 in Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). His childhood and school education happened in Colombo. Samy graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from the University of London. Samy began his career as a teacher at a college in Colombo. His family moved to India in the late 1930s. The first play written by him was Bilhanan, which was broadcast on All India Radio, Tiruchi station, and was a hit.
Bala Shanmuganantha Stage Troupe bought the play from A S A Samy and staged it. In 1948, the play was made into a film with the same title produced by Jupiter Pictures, in which Samy wrote the screenplay and dialogues. A S A Samy got associated with Jupiter Pictures and wrote screenplay and dialogues for its films. He directed many films including- Rajakumari (1947), Ponni (1953), Thuli Visham (1954), Needhipathi (1955), Muthu Mandapam(1962), Maya Sundari (1967), and others. The film- Thirumagal, released in 1971, was A S A Samy's last film as director. A S A Samy passed away in the year 1998 in Tamil Nadu.
