K.P.Udayabhanu was born on June 6, 1936, at Tharoor, Palakkad District, Kerala India. His parents are N.S.Varma and Ammu Nethyaramma. His father was a businessman in Singapore, so he spent his childhood in Singapore. His nephews were a music scholar and Freedom Fighter. They are K.P, Appukutta Menon, and K.P.Kesava Menon.
At the age of seven, he returned to India. He learned music under the guidance of several famous artists by joining in Thyagaraja Sangeetha Vidhayala located in Kalpathy. He married Vijaya Lakshmi, a singer in 1970. They had one son Rajeev Udaya Bhanu. At 1956, he started his career as an All India Radio Announcer. He worked there for about thirty-eight years. In Lawrence school at Lovedale, he worked as a music teacher for about one year between 1964 and 1965. But he discontinued the job and again joined in All India Radio.
He started his music career by recording his first song for the movie Nairu Pidicha Pulivalu in 1958 for the song Enthinithra panchasara. He sang for almost fifty songs in his career. He sang his last song in 2010 for the movie Thanthonni. He sang this song after a gap of forty years of his last recording. He has a music troop named old is gold which travels to all over India and done several shows. In 1985 he organized the drums show as a part of Republic day function fest. For more than hundred patriotic songs, he built music. Of these hundred songs, eighty songs were made in his mother tongue Malayalam and rest of the twenty songs were composed in other languages like Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and some more languages. He is a fan of K.S.Chitra and K.J.Yesudas. His favorite Carnatic Musician is M.Bala Muralikrishnan.
