Bharathan-Malayalam

Bharathan is a well-known filmmaker, art director, and artist from the Malayalam film industry. He was born on 14 November 1946 in Wadakkancherry, Thrissur, Kerala. He earned a Diploma in arts from the College of Arts, Thrissur. Bharathan debuted as an art director in the Malayalam film Gandharavakshetram in 1972. In 1975, he debuted as a filmmaker in the movie Prayanam. The film is about a dumb-witted central character, who falls in love with the village's beauty. He has directed over 40 Malayalam and Tamil films. His notable films are Rathinirvedum, Paalangal, Chamaram, Amaram, Vaishali, Ormakkayi, Kattathe Kilikkoodu, and Kathodu Kathoram. He always made meaningful cinema. In the movie In Oru Minnaaminunginte Nurunguvettam, he told the story of a childless couple in post-retirement life.

In Vaishali, he depicted the sub-story of the Mahabharata epic. His other movie, Nidra, is about the plight of a woman who is in love with a mentally deranged man. Bharathan received various awards for his directional skills. He won the National Award for Best Feature Tamil Film Thevar Magan in 1992. He has also received South Filmfare Award for the Malayalam movie Thakara in 1979, Chamaram in 1980, and Ithiri Poove Chuvannapoove in 1984. In addition to this, he also got a Kerala State award for Best Art Direction in various Malayalam films. At the age of 52, on 30 July 1998, he died at a private hospital in Chennai due to prolonged illness.
