Sundar Das

Sundar Das is a film director in the Malayalam film industry. He was born in Calicut in Kerala, India. Sundar Das has directed more than ten movies in Malayalam. He is famous for his films Sallapam which released in the year 1996, Sammanam in 1997 and Kuberan in 2002. His debut movie as a director was Sallapam which was also the Malayalam Actress Manju Warrier's debut movie.

After his work in the film Akasham in the year 2007, Sundar Das took a break from the field and returned in 2013 with the movie Rebecca Uthup Kizhakkemala. He has been in the field since 1996. Sundar Das has two children Arjun Das and Arun Das. Sundar Das worked as a second unit director or assistant director from 1990 starting with the movie Parampara.

Then in 1993, he worked in film Akashadoothu and the movies Aksharam, Sadaram and Sindoora Rekha in 1995. Having directed and become famous after the breezy, romantic story Sallapam, Sundar Das gave surprise to the audience with his skills in other varied genres. For his debut movie Sallapam which was scripted by Lohita Das, Sundar Das was looking for a naive actor for the lead role.

He was impressed with actor Dileep's performance in the Malayalam movie "Ezharakkootam" in which Dileep's peculiar gestures, comic timing, and also his ability to enact emotional scenes seemed like such an attractive package for the director for his movie. Sundar Das believes that these aspects are Dileep's greatest treasures which makes him stand out and he appreciated Dileep's total commitment to his role in each one of his movies.

This handpicking of actors by the director turned as a boon for Dileep, with this movie Sallapam being a big break for him. Sundar Das's ability to spring surprises popped up again in his movie Akasham. In this film, he cast a comedian Harishree Ashokan as the main lead actor. He said that mostly movie heroes are the charming, superhero-type characters. He wanted to give a contrasting profile to show the life of a simple, hardworking man, a chief mechanic in a car service station.

He appreciates the actor's grit as Harishree Ashokan signed out of some well-known projects as he had to focus on the acting style of this routine man styled hero. V. C. Ashok was the scriptwriter to few blockbuster movies of the director Sundar Das including Kuberan and Varnakazhchakal.
