Sanju Surendran

Sanju Surendran is a famous Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer. He graduated from The Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. He is a National Award-winning Filmmaker, whose movies were displayed in many film festivals. He worked as a teacher of Film Direction and Screenwriting at the KR Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts, Kottayam, Kerala.

His worldview was inspired by the ideas of Mani Kaul and Indian Aesthetics. Surendran first discovered Hareesh’s writings when he was teaching at the film institute. The first story Surendran read was Niryatharayi. Niryatharayi is the one about the game of death. Sanju believed that two other stories that Hareesh had written, Manthirikavaal and Chappathile Kolabathagam, connected with the first quite well.

He also made an opinion that there was a theme of death and desire that seemed to run through all three of them. At the International Film Festival of Kerala, Sanju's debut was screened between December 8 and 15 in the International Competition section, which was based on these three short stories by S Hareesh. Sanju was influenced by Hareesh a lot. He stated him as one of the best story writers in contemporary Malayalam.

He wrote a documentary on Kutiyattam, Kapila, that won the National award for the best documentary. In 2015, Sanju received the prestigious 62nd Indian National Award (RAJAT KAMAL for Best Arts/Cultural Film) for his movie 'KAPILA.' Sanju directed Aedan- Garden of Desire in 2018. His first feature film, Aedan- Garden of Desire, won the Rajathachakoram award for the best debut director and also the FIPRESCI award for the best Malayalam film.
