KM Madhusudhanan was born in 1956 in Alapuzha, Kerala. He is a director, producer and talented artist who is popular for his paintings. He did his painting course at Fine Arts College in Trivandrum. He did his Print Making course at the Faculty of Fine Arts, MS University located in Gujarat’s Vadodara. Madhusudhanan is much interested in narrating films of a unique genre. In 1997, he made a documentary film in Malayalam and English, Balamaniyamma. In 2000, he made his Malayalam and English documentary on OV Vijayan. In 2001, he wrote and directed Self Portrait in Hindi, which speaks about a street photographer. The story deals with a photographer who could see his image in the photos of the dead people, whom he captured for the police records. The movie received appreciation internationally after getting screened in the international film festivals. It was awarded the Best Film in Greece. His next project was a silent film. He penned and directed a film that deals with the life of a projector repairer. The film titled, History is a Silent Film was also screened in various international film festivals.
After the success of the silent film in 2006, he made another documentary film in the same year in Telugu and English, Mayabazaar. Razor, Blood and Other Tales is a short film made by him in 2007. In 2008, he made Bioscope, a feature film in Tamil and Malayalam. Shambharik Kharolika speaks about the magic lantern of the 19th century. The lanterns were from Europe and developed by Mahadeorao Patwardhan and his sons in India. They perform slide shows across the country. This film is shown from the perception of a couple of robbers. The Logic of Disappearance – A Marx Archive is his exhibition with drawings, sculptural and video installations. Ninety charcoal drawings are shown on display in 2015. Penal Colony is the new series by Madhusudhanan. It is based on an incident that happened in 1921 in Kerala when the British ruled India.
In 2016, he exhibited at Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in Noida. In the same year, he had one more exhibition at Delhi Art Fair. The movie also grabbed many awards, including Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Background Score and Best Film Processing Lab. It also received 5 awards at the Kerala State Film Awards.
