Surya Kumar

Surya Kumar is an Indian cinematographer, who works in three film industries Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi . His career started with his first independent work, the film ‘Thiranottam’, in 1978. Indian Society of Cinematographers (ISC) was founded by him He was born in Thiruvananthapuram,Kerala. He is married and has two children. His son, Kunjunni Surya Kumar, is also a Cinematographer. He has been nominated for many awards. In 1991 he won Kerala state film award for best cinematography for ‘Kilukkam.’He won the national film award for “Parinayam” in 1994. In 2004 he again won Kerala state film award for best cinematography for ‘Akale.’In 2003 and 2005, he won Asianet film awards for ‘Pattalam’ and ‘Udayananu Tharam.’In 1992, Kumar ventured into Hindi moviesand the Amrish Puri starrer "Muskurahat", which also featured Jay Mehta.

Kumar has worked on numerous projects and documentaries too. Camera work for the Priyadarshan-directed "Onnanam Kunnil Oradi Kunnil" was done by kumar in 1985. In 1987, Kumar did the camera work for the legendary Padmarajan’s drama, "Nombarathi Poovu,” the Kamal-directed "Unnikale Oru Kadha Parayam" and Sibi Malayil’s femme fatale movie, "Ezuthappurangal.” Also saw him as the cinematographer for the Mohanlal starrer comedy. His work can be seen in the songs which used to be aired on doordarshan ‘Zara Hatke’ and ‘Kanoon Ka Beta’. Kumar also worked for the Venus studios.
