Shankar Bidari was a highly decorated police officer in Karnataka who held the positions of Director General and Inspector General of Police in the state. He was born on 27th August 1954 in Galagali village of Bilagi Taluka in Bagalkot District, Karnataka. In 1982, he served as the SP in Mandya District when it was seriously afflicted by communal disturbances, agitations of farmers and laborers, caste conflicts, etc. His father was an agriculturalist. Shankar Bidari completed his education at Government Kannda Boy’s School, Banahatti. Later he joined G.I Bagewadi College, Nipani. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Karnataka University in 1975 as an external candidate.
He was also responsible for serving as commissioner of Police in Banglore City on 11th July 2008. He was promoted to the post of ADGP in August 2005. Moreover, he has been decorated with many awards including, Karnataka Chief Minister’s Gold Medal in 1989, The Police Medal for Gallantry in 2011, President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2003, Tippu Sultan Award, Sri Vishveshwaraiah Award, Kumara Rama Award, Dr. Ambedkar Award, etc. He was selected as Probationary Assistant Commissioner by K.P.S.C. He was nominated for Indian Police Service in 1978 and allotted to Karnataka. He served the state with dedication for almost 42 years. He retired from his service in May 2012.
