Jim Ankan Deka is a musician, documentary filmmaker, photographer, and director of an organization and music school based in Bangalore. His music institute and production house are the first to be established by an Assamese in Bangalore. Deka started playing guitar when he was 3. In the beginning, he studied Borgeet and Khol. In addition to composing and arranging music for albums, TV series, documentaries, short films, and ad jingles, Deka has also written songs and composed original lyrics.
Since 2012, he has composed music for six albums in several languages, including English, Hindi, Assamese, Mizo, and Goalpor. At 18, Deka began his musical career with the Assamese band Prahar and their album Prahar: Tumi Kowa Kothaborhar. He is also a bass guitarist and keyboardist. Deka has also appeared in many concerts, events, and TV shows. Deka founded La-Jazz in Guwahati in 2001, which closed in 2006. In Assam, Deka is part of the band Voodoo Child. He was also interested in concert and event photography. Deka is also part of Veenar, an acoustic rock band in Bangalore, and Eastern Fare, a jazz fusion band. Deka founded The Eastern Fare Music Foundation in 2006 in Bangalore, The Eastern Fare Music Club opened in 2009, and the Eastern Fare Music Studio opened in 2010. The Eastern Fare Music Foundation launched Eastern Fare Productions in Bangalore in 2010. Under the same production company, Deka directed two short documentaries: Nagaland: Journey through the choir of clouds and Shillong. In addition, the company produced two music videos and a short film.
Having co-founded a travel information and activity center in Guwahati and Umiam in 2017, Deka also has branches in Bangalore and Umiam. The company has taken on various projects to assist villages in the northeast through sustainable development and training on soft skills. He won multiple awards for his song Aawaz against sexual violence. Renault Free the Music Award, presented by Songdew, also recognizes his outstanding contributions to indie music. For his Eastwards project, he was awarded Weave Your Sound by FabIndia and Songdew. Deka has been invited to some of India's biggest music competitions and events to serve as a judge or guest.
