Deepika Chikhalia was born on 29 April 1965 in Pali Hill area of Bandra, a suburb of Mumbai. She soon changed her name from Dipti Chikhalia to Deepika Chikhalia, and is also referred as Deepika Topiwala with her husband's last name. This famous actress began her acting career in 1983 and was active in the film and TV industry until 1994. She debuted as an actress in the 1983 film, Sun MeriLaila. She continued to act in several movies, performing supporting roles in
Bhagwaan Dada, 1986, Kala Dhanda Goray Log, 1986, Doorie,1989 and played lead heroine in the horror film Cheekh, 1986 and Raat Ke Andhere Mein, 1987.
Her first TV performance was in the popular television serial Dada Daadi Ki Kahani, broadcast in 1985. In 1987 she started acting in the very popular television series Ramayan. She played the role of Sita and gained enormous national popularity. What followed next in her career were several lead roles in more popular TV serials like Vikram Aur Betaal in 1988, The Sword of Tipu Sultan, and
Luv Kush - both in 1989. She performed in several Hindi films including Ghar Ka Chiraag in 1989, Rupaye Dus Karod in 1991, Sanam
Aap Ki Khatir in 1992, as well as in one Bengali film, Asha O Bhalobasha in 1989 and one Tamil film Naangal in 1992. After 1992 she started acting in Hindi films but mainly in supporting roles.
Deepika became politically active and in 1991 was elected as a Member of Parliament in the Indian Lok Sabha from the Baroda constituency.
