Usha Khanna is an Indian music director of Hindi Cinema. She is famous for songs like “Shayad Meri Shaadi Ka Khayal Aaya Hai”, “Zindagi Pyaar Ka Geet Hai”, “Chodo Kal Ki Baatein” and “Aap To Aise Na The”. Usha was the third female music director after Saraswati Devi and 'Jaddanbai'. She made her debut from the film Dil Deke Dekho in 1959.
Usha was born in Gwalior to Manohar Khanna; he was a singer and lyricist. His father started writing Ghazals on the insistence of Jaddanbai, mother of Nargis Dutt. Music Director O.P. Nayyar introduced Usha Khanna to Sashadhar Mukherjee. He signed her for Dil Deke Dekho in 1959.The movie featured Asha Parekh, and it was her debut movie as well. It was a big hit, and she got another film with O.P. Nayyar and Asha Parekh, Hum Hindustani in 1961.
Usha used to take inspiration from Arabic Music because she liked Arabic music. Usha collaborated with Asha Bhosle and Mohammad Rafi, and this team worked very well and did many hits together. Saawan Kumar Tak used to be her lyricist, and she got married to him but later they separated. She scored music for about 11 films. Usha has struggled hard in the industry, so she gave a chance to many new singers like Sonu Nigam, Pankaj Udhas, Roop Kumar Rathod, Anupama Deshpande, Mohd. Aziz, Shabbir Kumar and 'Hemlata'.
She has composed music for many films which include Saajan Bina Suhagan, Do Khiladi, ‘Souten’, Hanste Khelte, ‘Dada’, Saajan Ki Saheli, Lal Bungalow, Ankh Micholi and ‘Shabnam’. Usha got nominated in Filmfare for composing songs for hit film Souten in 1983. Usha had a great career until the 1990s. Recently she gave music for Dil Pardesi Ho Gaya in 2003. It was directed by Saawan Kumar Tak, Usha’s Ex- Husband.
