In 1967, Saawan Kumar Tak came back to Mumbai and became an actor. He tried at two to three studio, but he didn’t get the break. After that, he decided to start from the top, as a producer in the film industry. He requested his sister to lend 25,000 rupees to produce a movie. His sister refused, but his brother in law agreed. And he produced Naunihal.
This film didn't prove to be a commercially successful but got the presidential mention at the National Awards. With this, he gave a break to Sanjeev Kumar. He saw him at a theater production where he was filling in for an established actor. Saawan Kumar impressed by his performance and promised him to give him a role in his first film. For Gomti Ki Kinare he signed Meena Kumari, but after six days of shooting, she fell seriously sick. The shooting stopped, but Meena Kumari wanted this is to be her last movie. Somebody had to hold her all the time. Somehow they completed the film but it was a forced effort, and it showed in the final print. His life changed with Hamas, which was a bold venture and did great business at the box office. Saawan Kumar Tak did many of the movies. His famous movies are Humrahi (1974), Saajan Bina Suhagan (1978), Pyar Ki Jeet (1987), Souten Ki Beti (1990), Sanam Bewafa (1991), Kaho Naa Pyar Hai (2000), Dil Pardesi Ho Gayaa (2003), etc.
