Jimmy Shergill is a renowned Indian actor and producer in the big screen, known for working predominantly in Punjabi and Hindi movies. He was born in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh in India on December 3, 1972 to a Sikh family. His real name is Jasjit Singh Gill, the son of the popular painter, Satyajit Singh Shergill. He studied at St. Francis College in Lucknow in his early years before he shifted to Punjab and studied at The Punjab Public School. He also attended Bikram and Nabha College and Patiala’s Punjabi University. Jimmy has learned to act through his guru, Sri Harpal Singh. He went to Mumbai to pursue his career as an actor.
He started acting in the year 1996 through the critically acclaimed Hindi film, Maachis, a film that is based on the Punjab terrorism. This film made a positive result at the box office, and he got noticed by top filmmakers, which eventually led him to appear in Aditya Chopra’s multi-starrer musical romantic drama film, Mohabbatein. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan Aishwarya Rai and
Shah Rukh Khan in the lead roles.
He was notable for his performance in Hindi films like Mere Yaar Ki Shadi Hai in 2002 alongside
Uday Chopra and
Bipasha Basu; Haasil in 2003 from which he acted in the lead role; Munna Bhai; the Hindi war drama romance film, Yahaan in 2005; the comedy film, Lage Raho Munna Bhai in 2006; Eklavya: The Royal Guard in 2007; the thriller drama film, A Wednesday! in 2008; Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan in 2010; the romantic comedy film,
Tanu Weds Manu in 2011; the romantic thriller drama film, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster in 2011 and the 2013 sequel of the film entitled Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns; the thriller heist film, Special 26 and Bullet Raja in 2013; Fugly in 2014 and this year’s blockbuster hit film, Tanu Weds Manu Returns. He also acted with Mukesh Bhatt’s production venture, Yeh Zindagi Ka Safar in the year 2001, opposite
Ameesha Patel, where he earned his Best Actor in a Supporting Role award at the Star Guild Awards (previously the Apsara Guild Awards).
Jimmy made his acting debut in Punjabi film industry through the 2005 feature film, Yaaran Naal Baharan, from which he stars alongside
Juhi Babbar in the lead role. This was followed by several Punjabi films, which made him become one of the top actors in the film industry, and most of his films went well at the box office. Jimmy also collaborated with the Mumbai-based motion picture production and distribution company, Eros International PLC. His first production venture was the 2011 Punjabi film, Dharti, from which he also acted in the lead role together with
Prem Chopra. The 2012 drama action comedy film, Taur Mittran Di was produced under his own banner, Jimmy Shergill Productions. In 2013, he produced and made a cameo in the Dheeraj Rattan’s Saadi Love Story and Navaniat Singh’s Rangeelay in the same year.
Jimmy got married to a Delhi-based girl named Priyanka Puri, and they have one son Veer Shergill.
