Govardhan Asrani, simply known with the pet name Asrani, is a popular Bollywood veteran actor. He was born on 1st January, 1941 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Asrani's father had a small carpet shop. He had four sisters and three brothers. Since childhood, Asrani never had interest in business and also he was very bad in mathematics. He completed his schooling from St. Xavier School and received graduation from Rajasthan College, Jaipur. To pay for his education, he worked as a voice artist in the all India Radio.  He had a passion about acting. Asrani learnt acting in Sahitya Kalbhai Thakkar for two simultaneous years from 1960 to 1962 and after his training; he shifted to Mumbai to seek opportunity in acting career. In accidental meetings with some Bollywood actors, they advised Asrani to professionally learn acting, for which he joined the Film Institute located in Poona, and completed the course in 1966. In 1967, Asrani did his first film debut as a side actor in “Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan". It was just a start to his career in acting and he is one of the successful actors in India and he is still acting till date. The myth that actors never retire, is truly applied on Asrani. He has done several of characters and roles in numerous movies. He is married to Manju Asrani, who is also an actress, with whom he fell in love while working together in the Bollywood film "Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar", a comedy film of 1973.

Besides being an actor, he directed Chala Murari Hero Banne, Salaam Memsaab, Hum Nahin Sudhrenge, Dil Hi To Hai, and Udaan. He also directed a Gujarati movie, Amadavad no Rikshavaro.

On 16th October 2025, Asrani suffered from breathing issues and was admitted to a hospital. On 20th October, he passed away due to fluid accumulation in the lungs.
