Vir was born in Dehradun, India on 31 May 1979 but lived in Africa. He did his studies from Indian Language School in Lagos, Nigeria and later got his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Theatre from Knox University, Illinois and after that got accepted into Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Vir got married to his longtime girlfriend, with whom he was in a relationship for five years, Shivani Mathur in October 2014. He first got to know his great talent of comedy at Knox, when he performed a one and a half hour show, called Brown Men Can’t Hump in Harbach Theatre of Knox. He reaped the fruits at Knox that he has sown at Knox in the form of a Richter Scholarship and won the Colton Performance Award for Outstanding Achievement in acting also. At Harvard, he trained as an actor for six months and with Moscow Art Theatre he performed eight plays.
He became a member of three acting troupes; Illegal Aliens, Improv Inc and The Useless Improv. Vir had a stage show in India at Habitat Centre in New Delhi. Vir performed in over 100 comedy shows after returning to India in 2003. He has written and performed in many shows so far, which include VIRagra, Whose Line Is It Any Way? , Who Let The Das Out? , Bored Of Things, Son Of A Switch and Not For Members Only.
Vir started his career in acting on TV from Zoom Channel, where he hosted two shows; Is Route Ki Sabhi Linen Mast Hain and Ek Rahin Vir and was a part of The Great Indian Comedy Show on Star One. Vir is writing columns for Tehelka, DNA, Maxim, Femina and Exotica. He started his YouTube Channel with the name Vir Das on 5 September 2013.
