Walter Matthau is an American actor and comedian well known for his work in film ‘The Old Couple’ in 1968 and ‘Gumpy Old Man’ in 1993. He has also done the sequel of these films in 1998 and 1995. His full name was Walter John Matthow and he was born in New York City, U.S. His mother’s name is Rose and his father’s name is Milton Matthow.
He attended a Jewish camp, Tranquillity camp from where he started acting in shows of the camp. He did his high school from Seward Park High School. He has also worked as concession stand cashier for some time in Yiddish Theatre District. He has participated in World War ǁ and was in 453rd Bombardment group. After this he came back to America to pursue acting as his career.
He has done training at the Dramatic Workshop of The New School. There he was trained under the German director Erwin Piscator. He has won Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in play in 1962. His debut in motion pictures was with the movie ‘The Kentuckian’ in 1955. He has done many films including King Creole in 1958.
He has also directed a movie named ‘The Gangster Story’ in 1960. He has made appearances in TV shows too. The shows he has worked on are ‘Naked City’, an episode in ‘The Eleventh Hour’, ‘The dupont show of the Week’ and many more. From the comedy film ‘The Fortune Cookie’ in 1966, he got fame and he got an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
He has done lead roles in movies ‘Hello Dolly!’ and ‘Cactus flower’ in 1969. He was on the advisory board of National Student Film Institute from 1980 to 1990. In 1994, a film was released named I.Q. in which Matthau has played role of Albert Einstein.
