Jonathan Mark Pearce is a British football commentator for BBC and TNT Sports. He works for Radio 5's broadcast program and Match of the Day, as well as appearing on other high-profile sports programs. Pierce was born in 1958. Growing up, Pearce always wanted to be a football player for Bristol City. His football career ended when he broke his leg at the age of 14. During childhood, Jonathan worked as a commentator in Subbuteo games played at home. He began his career as a part-time broadcaster at BBC Radio Bristol, where his first match commentary was Bristol Rovers' Carabao Cup draw with Exeter City.
In 1987 he moved to Capital Radio London and a year later launched Capital Prime Sports Time on Capital Prime Radio, before his Radio 5 Live and Workday programme. He commented on several minor Premier League matches played for Sky Sports during the 1992-93 season. Pearce produced the Robot Wars TV series for BBC Two and Channel 5 between 1998 and 2004 and reprised his role in the 2016 reboot. When Channel 5 was founded in 1997, Pearce signed up to become their sports director.
In 2002, he joined BBC Radio 5 Live and was part of the FIFA World Cup commentary team. He went on to present the channel's midweek sports program Sport on Five from 2003 to 2005, and in 2004 he became a commentator on BBC One's Match of the Day. He has also contributed to Sensible Soccer, the Ubisoft football game Action Soccer, and UEFA Strikers. In addition to football, he also commentates on Robot Wars and Hole in the Wall TV series. Pearce has coached the FA Cup, League Cup, and Championship and has coached five World Cups 2006, 10, 14, 18, and 22 and four European Championships in 2008, 12, 16, and 2020, three Women's World Cups in 2015, 2019 and 2023 and the Women's European Championship in 2022.Â
