Cameo Appearances can be called as a mini supporting role. A known face is generally chosen for a cameo as it boosts the value of the film for that moment of time.
Cameo appearances help the film to reach out to a more number of audience if it has a star in it. For example, if an A list star does an a cameo appearance in a film, it generally gets more eyeballs and publicity because of the star's name attached to the project. Generally, cameo appearances aren't to take forward the story as much as they are for the addition of glamour.
