Chinmoy Lahiri was a vocalist. He is from Bengal. He was born on 20 March 1920 in Pabna and brought up in Lucknow. His father's name was Jeep Chandra Lahiri and he was an engineer. His mother was Sarajubala Debi. He had a passion for music. He learned music at Morris College of Music, Lucknow. His teacher was Pandit Shrikrishna Narayan Ratanjhankar. He started his career as an approved artist at AIR Lucknow in 1936. He also worked at Dhaka Radio. During the partition of India in 1947, he shifted to 'Calcutta' (Kolkata). His first record was released by HMV in 1994. He also worked as a music Professor at Rabindra Bharati University.
He made a significant contribution to Indian classical music. He created many Ragas like Nag Ranjani, Yogamaya, Shivani and many more. He was an exponent of Thumri, Geet and Ghazals. He performed as a playback singer for the Bengali movie Maandanda in 1950. He also served in films like 'Dvairath,' 'AntaraalIndia,' 'Bapu Ne Kaha Tha, etc. He became popular overnight after performing at 'All Bengal Music Conference' in 1952. He also wrote two books on music. Morris College gave him the title of Sangeet Visharad. He died on 17 August 1984 in Calcutta, West Bengal, India.
