Moushumi Bhowmik was born on the 29th of December, 1964, in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, India. Moushumi is the younger of the two children of her parents, Bhupendranath Bhowmik and Anita Sengupta-Bhowmik. Goutami, Bhowmik’s elder sister, is a mathematician. Raised in Shillong, with early years spent in Agartala and Shantiniketan, Bhowmik attended Pine Mount School in Shillong. She has graduated and earned her master’s degree in English from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. She also earned her PhD from Jadavpur University in 2022, with her doctoral research focusing on Arnold Bake’s ethnographic field recordings from Bengal.
Bhowmik is a singer-songwriter, writer and researcher. She began her career as a journalist with The Statesman and later worked as an editor with Stree. Her deep passion for Bengali folk music has driven her to achieve remarkable milestones in the world of music. Among the numerous roles that she has imbibed over the years, her work as a singer-songwriter has taken shape in the form of four acclaimed albums, namely, Songs from 26H (2017), Ami Ghor Bahir Kori (2001), Ekhono Galpo Lekho (2000) and, Tumio Chil Hao (1994). Beyond her albums, many documentaries and art films have featured her music, notably Tareque Masud’s Matir Moina or The Clay Bird. In 2003 it won the Best Music at Kara Film Festival in Krachi followed by the Critics’ Prize at Cannes in 2002. That same year, she founded Parapar, a collaborative band bringing together musicians from Kolkata and London. The ensemble blended the soulful notes of kirtan, bhatiyali, blues and classical traditions, creating a distinctive cross-cultural sound.
One of the highlights of her career has been The Travelling Archive. As described by Moushumi herself, it is a space where field recording of songs, stories and other sounds of Bengal exist. Geographically it covers Bangladesh, the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, and areas adjoining Assam and the diasporic communities of London.
