Sukhen Das was an Indian Bengali film actor, story writer and director. He was born on July 28, 1938 in Kolkata, British India and died on April 04, 2004 in Kolkata due to heart failure. Sukhen spent most of his childhood in an Orphanage and he had to discontinue his studies because of financial problems. Later, he fled from the orphanage and took shelter in a doctor’s chamber. During the time in the doctor’s chamber, he roamed near the film studios or sets and was spotted to act as a child actor by Debnarayan Gupta for the movie Dasiputra released in the year 1949. Sukhen acted in many commercial movies like Maa Ek Mandir.
He chose a different role in every movie he acted and displayed variations. Sukhen also directed films like Milan Tithi and Sayani. One of the typical roles for him is becoming a handicap in an accident while saving his friend or brother and being ill-treated by others. Another unusual role played by him was in the movie – Pratisodh. He was an action hero and was a new role. Sukhen‘s work started in the year 1949 and continued till 2003. Sukhen directed about 20 movies during this period and his work as a screenplay writer were shown in three films – Sunayani (1979), Rajnandini (1980) and Pratisod (1981).
In 1973, after the release of the movie ‘Athena Atithi’ , he took a break for three years and started his career again in 1976. Sukhen Das amazed people with his acting skills by playing different. He released atleast one movie per year till the year 1972 and thereby becoming the most popular personality, especially in Bengali screenplays. His last screenplay was ‘Arjun Aamar Naam’ released in the year 2003.
