Moinak Biswas is a Professor Emerita and Media Lab Coordinator at Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Moinak was born in a Bengali family in West Bengal, India. He did his B.A. in 1983 and M.A. in 1985 from Jadavpur University. In his early days, Moinak became a Lecturer of English at the Haldia Government College in West Bengal. In 1992, he completed his M. Phil. from Jadavpur University, simultaneously working as a faculty there. Moinak then went to the Monash University in Australia for a Ph.D. in Film Studies. With the vast amount of knowledge and experience that Moinak gained over the years, he published several books concerning the various aspects of the film industry. Some books he wrote are Apu and After: Re-visiting Ray's Cinema (2006), Historical Realism: Modes of Modernity in Indian Cinema, New Cinephilia, Ujan Gang Baiya (2018) and Mourning And Blood-Ties.
He was also the editor of Journal of Moving Images, which was a critique on contemporary screen cultures published by the Jadavpur University. Along with that, he co-edited BioScope for South Asian Screen Studies. In 2009, Moinak wrote and co-directed the Bengali feature film Sthaniya Sambaad. Often regarded as one of the best films of modern times, it is based in the post-partition era of West Bengal and chronicles the experiences of a poet who returns to Kolkata to seek his long-lost lover. The film created the video installation Across The Burning Track, which was commissioned for the 11th Shanghai Biennale in 2016.
