Ajoy got his first independent director break after he narrated a script he wrote to S.L. Jalan, who offered him a 25 percent share of the gross. Thus, his first independently directed film was Pratham Prem (1965). Pratham Prem was a great success, and he started getting more offers to work as a director. Ajoy was offered to direct the Hindi version of the film Pratham Prem by Subodh Mukherjee. He thus worked on the Hindi version of Sambandh (1969). Ajoy has since directed many films, including Do Aankhen (1974), Gunaoh ki Phool, Samjhauta (1973), Badhu Bharan (1967), Bhoodan, Radha, Shraddhhu Jab, Raktatilak (1974), and Jeevan Prabhat.
