Rajen Tarafdar was a screenplay writer, director, and actor in the Indian Film Industry. He was born in 1917 in British India in the province of Bengal. He studied for a Bachelor’s degree in Popular Arts from the Government College of Art and Crafts in Kolkata. Initially, he worked in an advertising agency as a graphic designer. He entered the space of direction in 1957 with the movie Antarikhsha for which he also wrote the screenplay. In 1980, he made his acting debut with the Bengali film Akaler Shandhaney.
The films directed by him include Palanka, Jiban Kahini, Ganga, Agnisikha, Akash Chhnoa, and Nagpash. He won National Award in 1960 for his film Ganga in the category of Best Feature film and 1975 for Palanka. He was awarded the Bengal Film Journalist’s Association Award for Best Director for Nagpash (1988) and Best Screenplay – Sansar Simante (1976). He died in 1987 at the age of 70 years.
