Sabitabrata Dutta was an Indian movie actor, singer and director. He was a Bengali. He was born on the 14th of January 1924 in Bakul Bagan, Bhabanipur, Kolkata. He was the son of the violinist player Surendranath Datta. He attended South Suburban School, Bhabanipur. He completed his Higher Secondary School at Asutosh College. He graduated with a B.Com degree from City College of Commerce. He also studied music for a short period of time at Morris College. He was married to the singer Gita Dutt. Sabitabrata is well-known for his patriotic songs. He is also famous for acting in films like Tulsi Lahiris Pathik (1949) and Rabindranath Tagores Raktakarabi (1954). In 1954, he gained a lot of praise from many theatre companies for his role of Bishu Pagal in the play Raktakorobi. He also worked with his wife in the play Lalon Fakir, which was produced by Rupkar in 1970. In 1938-1939, he was the volunteer-in-charge of the strike held by artists and artisans of the Artists Association of Kolkata.
He was also associated with the Gananatya Sangha of Kolkata in 1940. In 1955, he formed his own group Rupakar along with Lahiri and Gita Bhaduri. He directed Sukumar Rays Chalachittachanchari (1957) and Amritalal Basus Byapika Biday (1960). He also contributed to the production of Manmatha Rays Lalan Fakir (1970), Nidhubabur Tappa (1979), and Nazrul (1980). Apart from acting, he used to sing also and he was famous for Mukunda Das’s songs. Some of his famous songs are Chhere Dao Reshmi Churi, Sarata Duniya, Shibastak, Diner Din Sab Din, Muktir Mandir Sopan Tale, etc. He passed away at the age of seventy-one on the 21st of November 1995 in Kolkata, West Bengal, due to Malignant Malaria.
