The film industry is not limited to a particular profession. Many actors had become directors and producers and in the same way, many directors had become actors or producers. Here are a few Tamil directors who turned actors.
“K Bhagyaraj” started his career as an assistant director to “P Bharathiraja.” He also acted in small roles in Bharathiraja’s directorial ventures. Bhagyaraj’s movies always have some fun elements. Most of his films as the hero were directed by him. After Vettiya Madichukattu, he started doing supporting roles.
“Visu” is popular for his family genre movies that give importance to relationships. His movies are mainly based on women and he had always shown both sides of society and given beautiful messages. Usually, he plays a small yet important role in his films. Samsaram Adhu Minsaram and Sakalakala Sammandhi showed his directorial skills as well as acting talent.
“R Parthiepan” is a wonderful actor cum director. He had played small roles in Bhagyaraj’s movies when he assisted him. He turned the hero cum director with Puthiya Padhai that has “Seetha” as the leading lady. His first film brought him a huge appreciation for his direction and acting.
Sundar C is one of the few directors who impress the audience with his comedy films. Ullathai Allithaa with Karthik Muthuraman is a good example. He also shined well in Arunachalam and Anbe Sivam, directing “Rajinikanth” and Kamal Haasan, respectively. He made his debut as an actor in Thalainagaram.
SJ Surya is very popular even now for his super hit films, Vaali and Kushi. Although he appeared in small roles in his directorial ventures, he turned a hero with New. He had also played in uncredited roles when he was an assistant director.
“K S Ravikumar” is popular for his rural movies in the initial stages of his career. However, his thriller film Puriyadha Pudhir with “Rahman,” Actress Rekha, “Raghuvaran” and Anand Babu was a new genre during that time. Ravikumar directed the lead stars, Rajini, Kamal, Sarathkumar, “Vijay” and Ajith Kumar. He had always appeared in a small role in his films. He started doing negative roles in the initial stages of his acting career and then character roles.
“Cheran,” the national-award-winning director, proved his excellence as an actor in Solla Marandha Kadhai, directed by Thangar Bachan. His films, Autograph, Pandavar Bhoomi and Thavamai Thavamirundhu, are still praised as classics.
“M Sasikumar” made his debut as an assistant director to “Bala” and then “Ameer.” His debut as an actor and director, Subramaniapuram was with “Jai” and Swathi Reddy and it was a super hit. Then he directed “Easan” with Abhinaya. Later, he carried out his profession as an actor and a producer.
“Samuthirakani” started his career as an assistant to director K Balachander. He made his debut as a director in TV Serials, including the hit serial “Anni” produced by KB. His first film as a director, Unnai Charanadaindhen with Venkat Prabhu and SPB Charan, was a hit and bagged awards.
“Ram” worked as an assistant director to Balu Mahendra and Rajkumar Santoshi. He made his debut as a director with “Jiiva” starrer Kattradhu Thamizh. He directed and played the hero in Thanga Meengal that fetched many awards, including three National Awards and two state awards. He played the hero in “Savarakathi” with “Mysskin” and Shamna Kasim and received appreciation for his performance.
