Paatal Lok is a Hindi crime-thriller web series that released on Amazon Prime Video on 15 May 2020. It was created by Sudip Sharma based on the novel ‘The Story of My Assassins’ that was written by Tarun Tejpal. The series was directed by Avinash Arun and Prosit Roy and produced by Anushka Sharma and Karnesh Sharma. The lead cast includes Jaideep Ahlawat as Hathiram Chaudhary, Gul Panag as Hathiram’s wife Renu, Ishwak Singh as Imran Ansari, Neeraj Kabi as journalist Sanjeev Mehra, Swastika Mukherjee as Dolly Mehra, Abhishek Banerjee as Vishal Tyagi, Jagjeet Sandhu as Tope Singh, Asif Khan as Kabir M, Mairembam Ronaldo Singh as Mary Lyngdoh or Chini, Sandeep Mahajan as officer Dahiya, Anindita Bose as Chanda Mukherjee, Vipin Sharma as DCP Bhagat, Asif Basra as Jai Malik, Manish Chaudhary as Vikram Kapoor, Akash Khurana as Singh Saab, Rajesh Sharma as Gwala Gujjar, and Anup Jalota as Balkishan Bajpayee.
The story was taken in the setting of Delhi and began with a police inspector Hathiram Choudhary, who has a regret that he couldn’t do anything with his life. He receives a high profile case of attempted murder of a journalist and reporter, Sanjeev Mehra. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Vishram Bhagat, has already arrested four suspects Vishal Tyagi, Tope Singh, Kabir, and Mary Lynhgoh. Mehra, who is already on the verge of getting fired, now has another issue to deal with. Hathiram, along with his junior, Imran Ansari, took up the case with the hope that this would make him proud of his life. They began investigations and found out that all four were hired independently for one purpose. The police discover that Tyagi was in connection to a mysterious ‘Masterji,' who no one knows about. To know more about why these four were contacted, Hathiram and Ansari dig into their lives and find out that they all had dark pasts.
In school, Tyagi killed three of his classmates, who molested his sister. Tope was forced to run from his village due to caste issues. Kabir’s brother was killed in communal riots. Mary is a transgender person whose real name is Cheeni, and he was sexually abused as a child. Mehra gets insider information about the investigation and telecasts it on the news to prevent his boss from firing him. A prime witness, Taariq’s body, washed up along the bank of a river, and the Delhi police are accused of doing it to cover the facts. Another mistake of Hathiram, discriminating against Mary, gets him a suspension. At home, he faces problems with his teenage son, who was being bullied.
The case is now in the hands of CBI, who announced to the police that this attempted assassination was a plan of ISI to create havoc in the Indian media. Mehra discloses this information in the media bringing upon more worries to the police. Hathiram and a journalist Sara work together to uncover the truth. Hathiram finds out that the ‘master ji’ is a Chitrakoot overlord named Donullia, who rules the areas government. Tyagi is Donullia’s master hitman, and they both share a bond. Two politicians Bhajpayee and Gwala, kill Donullia and to cover that up, plans to kill Tyagi, but involves the other three segments to make it look legitimate. After finding out that Donullia is dead, Tyagi commits suicide. On learning this, Mehra’s ego is hurt, so he continues the same terrorist attack story to maintain his image.
