Karnesh Sharma is an Indian producer and the co-founder of the production company called Clean Slate Films, along with his sister
Anushka Sharma, who is a famous Bollywood actress. Karnesh was born in Ayodhya, a small town in the central region of Uttar Pradesh. However, being an army kid, he grew up in Dehradun and Bangalore. At present, he lives in Mumbai. His father,
Ajay Kumar Sharma served as Colonel in the Indian Army, while his mother,
Ashima Sharma is a homemaker. He owes most of his fame to Anushka Sharma, his sister younger by four years.
Producing films was never Karnesh's priority. In fact, in the background he comes from, Bollywood wasn't considered a noble work field. The only films he got to watch were those screened at the officer's mess, which mainly consisted of Hollywood action thrillers like True Lies and Rambo, or Bollywood cult classics like Rangeela and DilwaleDulhaniya Le Jayenge. Thus, films weren't an essential part of his early life. On the contrary, he had a deep interest in Cricket. He was a state level cricket player and played for Karnataka in the Under-19 Ranji Trophy championship.
He started his training for Merchant Navy at the TS Chanakya, IMU Mumbai, at the young age of seventeen. Nobody knew that joining Merchant Navy would eventually pave the way for his career in Bollywood in more than one way. Being at the sea for long voyages, the only source of entertainment they had on the ship were movies. Thus, Sharma's introduction to the diversity of world cinema was purely coincidental. He watched all sorts of films- from Panama to crazy exploitation films! Soon, he left his job at the Navy and joined Yashraj Films to learn more about the intricacies of film production while working on films like ShuddhDesi Romance.
In 2014, he and Anushka co-founded their production company- Clean Slate Films, to create movies free of all "prejudices" and "baggage"; thus the name. Together, the brother-sister duo aims to provide opportunities to fresh talent, giving voice to newer stories and genres. In collaboration with Phantom Films, Sharma debuted as a producer with the critically acclaimed thriller drama, NH 10 in 2015, starring Anushka Sharma and Neil Bhoopalam, which became a sleeper hit. Experimenting with a different genre, he recently came out with Clean Slate's second production Phillauri, a quirky movie which marks the directorial debut of AnshaiLal. Sharma's upcoming projects include Pari, set to be released in 2018, and Kaneda, a crime thriller based in Canada.
