Uttaran (cast-offs), Indian television Hindi serial, is a story about two friends from different economic background. The story is of two little girls Tapasya and Iccha. Tapasya a rich kid cast-offs her things to her maid’s daughter Ichcha. In spite of difference in their status, Tapasya and Ichcha become best friends. The wicked characters in this serial create problems in their friendship creating a twist in the story. The overall story revolved around lives of these two friends who witness blossoms of love and happiness as well as pricking hatred and betrayal. The story moves ahead with a leap of 10 years when their children become young. With remarkable sequences the melodrama continues resulting increase in TRPs. However, with new tele channels and new serials the popularity of Uttaran has turned down. Recently, the story took a leap of 18 years adding zing of next generation kids with many new characters.

Uttaran premieres on Colors TV in India on the 1st day of December year 2008. The serial is broadcasted from Monday to Saturday at 10:00 PM. Thought it replaced popular show “Big Boss”, this novel story based on cast-offs has gained the hearts of Indian viewers leading its way to become one of the top shows on television. The serial’s popularity on Hindi television has bagged many awards. ITA Award for GR8! Ensemble Cast in 2009. In 2010 Ayub Khan, casted as Jogi Thakur has won Star Guild Award for best actor in a drama series, supporting actor award by ITA Award and Indian Telly Award. Rashmi Desai, casted as Tapasya has won Indian Telly Award for best actress in a negative role, ITA Award for Desh Ki Dhadkan - best actress - popular. Vaishali Thakkar, casted as Damini Ragendra Bharti won Indian Telly Jury Award for best supporting actress. In 2011, Film Farm India, the distributor of the serial, won the Indian Telly Award for best daily serial. Rashmi Desai won the Star Guild Award for best actress in a drama series. Mitali, the story writer of Uttaran, won Star Guild Award for best writer in 2012. Kiran Karmarkar casted as Tej Baldev Singh Bundela won best actor award in a negative role at Indian Telly Jury Award function in 2013. The show is currently running with over 1400 episodes, so far. With the growing popularity among hindi viewers, Uttaran is dubbed in Tamil as Sindhu Bhairavi which telecasts on Raj TV. In Malayalam it is dubbed as Valsalyam airs on Surya TV.

Cast:

1. Tina Dutta

Tina Dutta was born on 27 November 1986. She acted in Bengali films, Hindi TV series and movies. She is popular with her character as Iccha and Meethi in Uttaran. She started her acting career at the age of five. She appeared in Choker Bali, Bengali movie along with Aishwarya Rai when she was just 16 years old. On television she appeared in Koi Aane Ko Hai, Comedy Circus, Aahat. She appeared in a cameo in Parineeta in 2005. In Uttaran she plays the lead role. She also plays the role of Meethi, Iccha’s daughter. She has won awards like Apsara Awards, Colors Golden Petal Awards, Lion Gold Awards and All India Achievers Award.

2. Mrunal Jain

Mrunal Jain is a television and film actor. He made his debut with the role of Krishna in Kahaani Hamaarey Mahabharat Ki. He appeared as Hiten in Bandini and Sameer in Hitler Didi. At present he plays the role as Akash in Uttaran. He married Sweety Jain on 13 july 2013 in Mumbai.

3. Sreejita De

Sreejita De was born on 16 july 1990 in West Bengal. She studied in St. Xavier’s School. She graduated from Ruia College in Mass Media. She appeared on television and bollywood movies. She made her debut as Gargi Bajaj in Kasauti Zindagi Kay in 2007. She is presently playing the role of Mukta in Uttaran airs on Colors. She appeared in a Cameo in Tashan in 2008. She played as Annu in Annu Ki Ho Gayee Waah Bai Waah.

4. Ajay Chaudhary

Ajay Chaudhary was born on 31 January 1983. She is a model and television actor. He made his debut as Dev in Love Story on SAB TV. He is popularly known for his lead role as Abhay Singh in Phulwa on Colors TV and in Junoon – Aisi Nafrat Toh Kaisa Ishq as Akash on Life OK. He is currently playing the role of Vishnu in Uttaran on Colors TV.

5. Krip Suri

Krip Kapur Suri a model turned actor was born in a Punjabi family on 14 June in Delhi. He arrived to Mumbai in 2013. He appeared as Prof. Vardhan in Sadda Haq : My Life, My Choice on Channel V and as Raahukaal in Savitria aired on Life OK. He also appeared Yamla Pagla Deewana as Sukhdev. He is currently playing a negative role as Asgar in Uttaran airs on Colors TV.
