Plot
Vellai is a farmer who lives in a self-sufficient village. Things starts to go haywire as he and the villagers decide to take a bank’s crop loan. A drought leads to the farmers going into debt as they are forced to sell their crops at lower prices than usual. A few desperate farmers take a plunge and go to the city in search of a job in order to pay off the debts. Will they succeed in paying off their debts or will they be forced to give up farming?
Star Performance
All the performances were excellent. The cast delivers their respective characters with nuance, which made the audience connect with the characters well. The side characters must be appreciated for their ability to hold the series together in a way that doesn’t overshadow the leads yet provides the audience with a memorable performance. Each actor is indispensible in the film as they play their character in a way that remains unique to them.
Analysis
The emotional scenes land very well because the characters are easy to root for. The film would have benefited from having a shorted run-time as it wouldn’t drag as much as it does. A more linear plotline with lesser flashbacks would have made the film a lot better as it would be less confusing and more straightforward. The message the film conveys is admirable but not enough to provide an engaging experience for the audience.

Verdict
Vellai Yaanai is a film with good intentions that falters with the execution. There are many films that have broached similar subject matters and are executed a lot better. It is by no means a bad film, but it is hard to overlook its shortcomings as the movie gives very little to desire besides the emotion it aims to convey. It’s a good watch for people who are looking for films with a social message and may be enjoyable if expectations are managed.
