Plot

A speeding car hit Karthik, a talk show host who was excited for his very first interview with a celebrity. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brain dead. Meanwhile, Gautam, a superstar, was worried about his daughter, who urgently needed a heart transplant. Karthik’s heart matched with that of Ria, Gautam’s daughter, but his family was reluctant to do so. Finally, they agreed to transplant Karthik’s heart. Now that the heart was ready, the problem was how to transport it to Vellore that was 150 kilometers away in just two hours by road because there weren’t any flights available. A suspended officer Satyamoorthy, Dr Robin and Ajmal were assigned this task. Will they be successful in delivering the heart within time? The further story of the film answers this question.

Star Performances

Cheran once again delivers an impressive performance in this movie. His realistic approach towards the character makes it believable for the audience. Sarnathkumar while portraying a commanding officer puts forth a compelling and robust performance. Prakash Raj shines while portraying a tensed father whose daughter is fighting for her life. Radhika shines in the emotional scenes of the film. Prasanna delivers a satisfactory performance while showcasing the inner monster of his character. The rest of the cast supported the Film’s narration.

Analysis

There are various stories out there in the world which tell us how minor incidents can change the lives of people, who are hitherto not related to the each other. This movie focuses on one such accident that changed the lives of five characters, namely, Gautam Krishna, a reigning superstar whose daughter urgently needs a heart transplant; Satyamoorthy, a traffic police constable who resumed his service after the suspension; Dr. Robin who is madly in love with his wife and wants to make their anniversary memorable; Karthik who is beginning his first day at his dream job as a reporter; and Sundarpandian, a superintendent who comes across a daunting situation.  The direction and screenplay make this film a compact thrilling experience. Khader sticks to the main plot of the film and avoids any loopholes or sidetracking. The dialogues in the movie are convincing and make the audience aware about the race against the time. There is an unnecessary use of sound and music in this movie. Joseph’s music diverts the viewers’ attention from the emotions attached to the scenes. The background score of the movie is aptly used and enthralls viewers. Shehnad’s cinematography is fascinating. He perfectly captures the fast-paced car sequences of the film. However, the cut-to-cut editing makes the film fast-paced, which in turn fails to establish the characters correctly. The starting of the film is slow which makes the climax compressed. Also, there are too many cut scenes in the climax which lowers the standards of the story.

What’s There?

  • The film executed a complex and captivating story efficiently.
  • The impressive acting performances of the actors in the film.
  • The director’s impressive vision.

What’s Not There?

  • There is a scope for better editing.
  • The climax heavily relies on cut scenes.
  • There are some unrealistic and repetitive car sequences.
  • The music in the film is oddly placed.

Verdict

‘Chennaiyil Oru Naal’ tries to depict a beautiful and humane message with the help of a thrilling and compelling story. Watching this film is an enriching experience for the viewers. While entertaining the audience, it also conveys to them a heartfelt message about humanity and how a small initiative can save someone’s life. Also, the film’s stakes are raised by a surprise cameo by none other than Surya.
