Plot
Matinee is a movie about childhood friends Jaydev, Nixon, Anand and Naveena who visit their old friend Aruna after many years. Aruna, who is living a secluded life with his girlfriend Akshara after his mother’s death, becomes the target of their plan to scare him into selling his house. Their plan backfires, and they are the ones who get afraid of instead. Meanwhile, a mother files a complaint with the police to find her missing daughter, Chitra. The movie features horror, comedy, romance, and friendship with twists and funny dialogues.
Analysis
Director Manohar Kaampali sets the tone for the mansion with lighting, sound and visuals. The film’s pace is fast and horror fans will be on the edge of their seats. Anil Narayanan’s script is decent but lacks originality and structure,making it hard to get into the story. The comedy fails to tickle, the jokes are annoying and even the talented actors have nothing to work with. Despite, the attempts at horror the scare scenes miss the mark and unintentionally turn into comedy, undermining the director’s efforts to scare.
Star performances
Sathish Ninasam is good as Arun the central character of the film. Nagabhushana, Shivaram KR Pete, and Poornachandra Mysore are natural in their roles and add to the fun. Aditi Prabhudeva and Rachita Ram are in minor roles but are a good addition to the film.
