Saare Jahaan Se Mehnga Click to look into! >> Read More... ” is touted as a comedy on the current situation of stifling inflation and the effect it has on the everyday lives of common people. While it surely falls in the genre of comedy, there are elements of satire built into the script too, that allude to the apathy of the rulers of the day and their apathy towards the public at large, and the hollowness of the promises that these leaders make which gradually get exposed once they have been safely ensconced on their seats of power.

Plot: The name of the film itself gives out its satirical cum comic intentions – in the manner it twists the lines of a famous patriotic song eulogising the country and makes it a derisive one just by changing one word! The story of “Saare Jahaan Se Mehnga” is narrated through the plight of a lower middle class working for the family desperately trying to supplement its income through all means at its disposal to put up a fight against the rising cost of living. The location chosen is the small town of Sonepat, typifying the travails of the lower middle class. The head of this representative family is Puttan (wonderfully enacted by the talented Sanjay Mishra Sanjay Mishra is an Indian comedian, most famous f >> Read More... ).

Puttan’s family comprises his father Nagpal (played by Vishwa Mohan Badola); his wife Noori (with Pragati Pandey Bio coming soon... >> Read More... playing the role). The last member is younger brother Gopal (played by Ranjan Chhabra Ranjan Chhabra is a known Indian actor and model. >> Read More... ). Things start rolling when Puttan's friend gives him the cranky idea of availing of an interest-free loan scheme that had been announced, to stock up his home supplies for the next three years. The trouble starts after the entire family is seen madly thinning down supplies from departmental stores to build up their three years’ stocks. The visits of the loan inspector get more and more difficult to handle and the situations turn progressively chaotic if not desperately comic!

Review: On the whole, director Anshul Sharma Anushal Sharma is an Indian actor, assistant direc >> Read More... has tried to use the script and screenplay of the duo of Rupesh Thapliyal Rupesh Thapiyal is a male Screenwriter. But where the tempo of the film falters is in the second half where the script seems to have run out of fresh ideas to sustain the chain of comic ploys to handle the loan inspector’s ever increasing probes. The sad part is instead of thinking up fresh ideas, the ending of the film resorts to routine melodrama through the mouthing of clichéd homilies. While marshalling resources, the producers also seem to have compromised on the technical and production qualities and this shows up clearly as the negatives of the film, especially in the camera work and editing.

Star Performances: On the plus side, of course, is the acting of most of the important names in the cast, with Sanjay Mishra being outstanding in that role of the head of the family and the constantly worried look married with moments of expectations. Neither do the compositions of Manish Tipu leave too much of an impression nor do they find much relevance in the situations that they are used.

Verdict: In spite of these shortcomings “SJSM” is a film that provides for laughter and entertainment although in doses, and though not a must see film, can surely be watched for its comic and satire value.
