have written the screenplay of this film. C.K. Muraleedharan handled the cinematography of the film.
Plot
The movie revolves around a gang of five people who fall into a slow trap of the world of crime after a heist that goes wrong. The film’s intrigue grows more and more captivating and inescapable as the plot unfolds.
The film revolves around five guys who run a gambling club and are involved in other underground businesses. When the gang comes upon a massive drug deal that could earn each of them a hefty amount of money, they refuse to pass it up. However, the plan is not easy, and Vikram, the seemingly innocent member of the group, harbors a secret plan to betray the group and keep the money all for himself. The plot moves on to yet more twists and turns, eventually ending with the moral of “crime begets crime.” The movie ends with Vikram, or Johnny G, facing the consequences of his actions.
Star Performance
The main character of the film, Johnny, is played by Neil Nitin Mukesh. This is his first venture into acting. The way he has grasped his character is noteworthy and indeed admirable for a newcomer.
Dharmendra has played the role of Sheshadri, the morally questionable cop who becomes the link between the main characters and the world of crime. He comes into his own role, and his character seems to beget complicated feelings from the audience. There is also an undeniable chemistry and smoothness between the actors, which adds another layer to the plot.
The supporting cast has done an excellent job with their roles as well.
Analysis
The plot of Johnny Gaddaar explores a wide range of themes, from crime to greed to betrayal, and does so in a highly intricate way. Each scene of the film pushes people to the edge of their street. You can see the director’s love for suspense and mystery in every passing second of the movie.
The cinematography of the film, handled by C.K. Muraleedharan, is a style of its own. He uses dark and moody lighting to complement the themes of the film. However, the visuals get slightly tedious and predictable at times, with far too many close-ups and shots of railway stations.
One strong point of the movie is the soundtrack. Numbers such as “Dhoka” enhance the richness of the plot. Tracks such as “Move Your Body” add some much needed lightness to the film.
Yet, the most important, and possibly the best, element of the film is its screenplay, which director Sriram Raghavan wrote in collaboration with Pooja Ladha Surti. The film is suspenseful, clever, and nail-biting. Their collaboration has brought a phenomenally witty dynamic to the script, making it a standout feature of the production.
What’s There?
● The performance of the stars is excellent.
● The story has several elements that make it a well-rounded film.
● The duration of the film is perfect for such an intricate plot.
What’s Not There?
● The plot can be too complicated to follow.
Verdict
Johnny Gaddaar can genuinely be called a film that is one of its kind, complete with all of its pros and cons. However, it may not be for everyone, since the plot is nuanced in a way that can make it hard to follow and would not appeal to those looking for a more light-hearted experience. But the flawless elements of this film make it one you would not want to miss.
