Plot

Before retirement, top cop Prakash Rathod reflects on an incident that changed his life for once, and for all. On a Wednesday, he received a call from an unknown place, informing him that five bombs were placed in five different locations in Mumbai. If Prakash did not release three terrorists as per the demands, the bombs would explode in an instant. Who is this man, and why does he want the three terrorists to be free? Is there something else? Can Prakash and his cops stop the unknown caller before it is too late?

Star Performances

If this is the debut work of Neeraj Pandey, we wonder what he has next.

In less than 2 hours, we get a thriller that is not only straightforward but even supersedes Hollywood in many instances.

This is just not a film, but an acting powerhouse. Naseeruddin Shah as the unknown man, and Anupam Kher as the resolute cop give their best performances.

Analysis

‘What do you do when a cockroach enters your home? You don’t make it a pet; you just kill it!’

Can anyone equate eliminating terrorism with such a simple example? Well, not until you have seen Neeraj Pandey’s ‘A Wednesday’. Based on the multiple terror attacks that plague India, this is a novel thriller, that has the potential to develop into a trendsetter.

The movie is fast-paced, and almost flawless in terms of the narrative. There are little to no special effects, but they are mostly not required, as practical effects are more necessary for such films. Not once do you feel bored, and as a writer, Neeraj Pandey ensures that the dialogues are up to the mark.

The acting performances are just phenomenal. Naseeruddin Shah as ‘the stupid common man’ is the reflection of the masses who fall victim to such cowardly attacks. He is fed up with the constant inaction by the authorities concerned and decides to take the matter into his own hands. Anupam Kher as Prakash Rathod, is the perfect compliment to Naseeruddin’s solid delivery. Jimmy Shergill and Aamir Bashir as the tough cops make their presence felt.

What's There?

• Slick and fast-paced narrative

• A bold initiative through a well-paced screenplay

• Class acting by Naseeruddin Shah

• Superb support from Anupam Kher, Jimmy Shergill, Aamir Bashir, Kali Prasad Mukherjee, etc.

What's Not There?

• Nothing as far as we can remember

Verdict

‘A Wednesday’ is a brilliant take on how terrorism affects the common masses, and how some people are driven to the extreme when the authorities do not take the required action. The acting performances by Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah make this an unforgettable experience.
