Plot
The film’s protagonist is Bernadette Fox, played by Cate Blanchett. Bernadette was an architect but now suffered from agoraphobia and lives with her husband Elgie Branch, played by Billy Crudup, and their daughter Balakrishna ‘Bee’ Branch, played by Emma Nelson. Bernadette doesn’t leave the house and does not get along well with others, especially her neighbor Audrey Griffin, played by Kristen Wiig. When Bee wants to go to Antarctica as a reward for scoring good marks, Bernadette agrees although she was very nervous and scared. Bernadette becomes distressed when her husband blames her to have knowingly done something to cause damage to her neighbor Audrey’s house and also tries to get her to take psychiatric treatment. Feeling dejected by these events, Bernadette sneaks out of their home and goes to Antarctica. The film follows Bernadette as she experiences freedom and has new experiences in the outside world.
Star Performance
Cate Blanchett is phenomenal as Bernadette and perfectly portrays her anxiety, depression, fears, and vulnerability.
Analysis
The film is based on the 2012 book of the same name by Maria Semple. The book told the story from the point of view of Bernadette’s daughter Bee while the film shows the point of view of Bernadette. Because of this the film lacks charm as compared to the book.
What’s There?
• Stellar performances from Cate Blanchett and Kristen Wiig
• The film tells the story of self-discovery of an agoraphobic mother who is tired and slightly depressed
What’s Not There?
• The protagonist might seem annoying to some because of her ‘holier than thou’ attitude that makes her hate everyone other than her daughter
• The screenplay deviates from the novel a lot, making Bernadette’s disappearance lose its suspense and mystery
Verdict
The film would be a good watch for those who feel stagnated in their life, or feel dejected and devoid of any passion. The film would inspire them to venture out and rediscover themselves.
