PLOT: The story happens in the year 1919, once after the World war comes to an end. The couple had an assumption that their sons, who were a part of the Australian Army, are dead. With all his instincts and beliefs, he travels towards Turkey, where he meets Olga, a war-widow. In spite of many hurdles on his way, he finds one of his sons to be alive. Will Russell be able to reach his son?
ANALYSIS: Crowe's experiences in the cine field are clearly visible through his efforts. Though the movie used a lower amount as budget, the movie was simply magnificent. Major events that took place In the real history were also mentioned in the movie. The defeat at Gallipoli is also explained to an extent in the movie. As a director, he has succeeded well in dealing with the issues of reunion and loss.
STAR PERFORMANCES: Crowe's portrayal of a father filled with grief and sorrow is top notch. Olga has expressed her role's dilemma, a confusion between her long dead husband, and her feelings for Crowe, perfectly. Jacqueline's unforgettable performance as Crowe's wife adds points to the rating of the movie.
WHAT'S THERE? Andrew Lesnie's cinematography makes the movie to deserve an award. The way he captured the battle scenes, flashback scenes, the beautiful Australia and Istanbul, the emotions prevailing in such scenes, etc. are alluring. The way he plays with the colors is so cool. Crowe excelled in the fields of direction and performance.Â
WHAT'S NOT THERE? The love part of the movie failed to impress us as it did not work out well between Crowe and Olga. It looked a bit clumsy with all the slow motion scenes. Director missed to explain us more about the historical events, and rushes himself to the upcoming scenes. This irks the audience.
VERDICT: Russell Crowe's debut as a director is quite impressive, and his experience is visible through this movie.
