Plot

After some unusual events at the set, the director of a horror movie gets alcoholic actor Anthony Miller as a replacement. Despite the differences, he calls up his estranged daughter as his personal assistant. However, when his father is possessed by a demon during the shooting, Lee has to choose between her future and her father.

Star Performances

Ryan Simpkins and Sam Worthington are the positive things to talk about this film. Their performances somehow manage to salvage this film.

Analysis

It’s rare for a Hollywood horror movie to be bad, and it’s even rarer when Russell Crowe is one of the main reasons. But ‘The Exorcism’ has earned that rare distinction for now.

The movie follows the classic pattern of a disturbed character experiencing something unusual, and his estranged family member pulling him / her out of trouble. Russell Crowe is an alcoholic actor, who is possessed by a mysterious force, and it is upto his estranged daughter to save him.

For one rare moment, Bollywood filmmakers can take pride on the fact that they haven’t a horror movie as lopsided as this. The writers of this film are absolutely clueless about the main purpose of this movie. The movie is a horror film, but in some places, it unintentionally turned out to be a poor man’s ‘Scary Movie’!

The runtime of this movie is less than 1 hour 40 minutes, and yet the viewers will feel bored after a point. Even Russell Crowe’s performance is far from satisfactory, which is somewhat disappointing. The technical team has done an okayish job, but the mediocrity of this script is just unacceptable.

The only reason this film is somewhat watchable is because of two actors : Ryan Simpkins and Sam Worthington. For all the flaws of this movie, these two actors actually tried their best to save this film with their performances.

What’s There

  • Only the performances of Sam Worthington and Ryan Simpkins

What’s Not There

  • Bad acting by Russell Crowe
  • Mediocre script with no clear intentions
  • Terrible direction by Joshua John Miller
  • Average camerawork

Verdict

‘The Exorcism’ is a horror movie that tries too hard to be scary. The film is far from impressive, and even Russell Crowe’s presence is not enough to save it. The only good thing about this movie is the acting of Ryan Simpkins and Sam Worthington. Watch it only if you have lots of time to spare.
