Yes, inspired by the book Gideon Defoe’s The Pirate Series, Aardman Animations yet again works it wonders for another animation treat to our eyes.
Plot:
Hugh Grant stars as a Pirate Captain, high on life, a luxuriantly bearded Pirate, but less than successful on the High Seas. The crew is a group of rag tags, but closely knitted, and has a pet named Polly, the only living dodo. He is determined to win the title of “Pirate of the Year”, the winner being anyone who plunders the High Seas the most. Its 17th century, and all that the Queen wants, is the selective elimination of the pirates. Her throne has “I HATE PIRATES” written on it. After enough failed attempts to plunder monotonous ships, Pirate Captain talks to his best friend, to leave these and start a business, but is convinced to plunge on the next ship, which happens to be the Beagle. Failing to find anything on the ship they meet Charles Darwin. Darwin, on seeing the last living dodo which happens to be their pet as well, uses it to win the “Scientist of the Year” taking place in the Royal Society of London for a valuable prize. The pirates to help their new found friend and to get gold disguise themselves as girl scouts. While Darwin with the help of his trained chimpanzee tries to kidnap Polly the attempt fails as the Pirates catch him. Together they decide to dress as scientists and participate in the competition, where Polly is to be taken. Darwin wins the first prize as the dodo is requested by the Queen to be put for her petting in the zoo. During the ceremony, the pirate accidentally reveals his identity. The Queen asks the pirate to leave.
Later Pirate Captain wins the title of the “Pirate of the year” but his rival, Pirate Bellamy makes everybody known about the adventure, from which the Captain recovered. The title is taken away from the Captain, and his pirating license is snatched from him. The crew also deserts him on getting to know about Polly’s fate. On the Captain;s return to London, to start his business, after being ousted from the Blood Island, he makes up his mind to free Polly from that zoo. He accidently meets the shattered Darwin, who knows that the Queen is a part of a ravishing secret dining with the world leaders aboard in her steamship. The highlight of the menu is the dodo. The Captain, on this knowledge, requests Darwin’s help to steal an airship from the science contest to save Polly, from being made into a dish.
They together disrupt the dining aboard, while the rest of the pirate crew members join in when the chimpanzee tells them about it all. Together they free Polly from being made into a dish and safely escape leaving behind an angry Queen.
Analysis:
After watching some commendable animation movies like “Chicken Run” and “Wallace and Gromit,” The Pirates can be a little disappointing. With excellent animation into place, the language used in the movie can be a little objectionable. The storyline had the potential to be cute and appealing, especially to the children. The picture quality, coming from Aardman Animations, was as expected, superb. However, it was not enough to glue us to our seats.
Verdict:
An overall recommendation is to give it a miss.
