Plot

Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton, the missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, visit Reed, a middle-aged man. He welcomes them and takes them inside his house, telling them that his wife is preparing a blueberry pie. Reed discusses religion with them and comments on their faith, which makes them uncomfortable. When he just steps out of the room, Sister Barnes finds out that the smell of blueberry is not from the pie but from a candle in the room. She also realizes that their phones have no signal and the front door is locked. Both follow him to his study, where he gives them two choices to get out of the house. But, they find both ways are the same and they lead them to a dungeon. When they try to escape, Reed slits Barnes’ throat. Soon, they realize that all are orchestrated by Reed. What happened next? Did they escape? The rest of the story reveals about Reed and these two missionaries.

Star Performance

Hugh Grant’s performance is extraordinary. His eye expressions and dialogue are awesome. He hooks the audience with his menacing performance. Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East fit well in the characters and proved their worth. They emote well in the intense scenes, especially when they find out they are trapped and when they plan to attack and escape. The rest of the stars did their parts decently.

Analysis

The first half of the film is finely made with interesting scenes and dialogue. With the claustrophobic atmosphere where the missionaries are struck, the makers make the audience go deep into the script and travel along with them. The black comedy works out well, making the audience smile at it. Though the film has a lot of interesting moments, there are a couple of scenes that make the audience feel jarring. Though there are a few mistakes in the execution, the performances, screenplay, the visuals, and the BGM make it a decent watch.

What’s There?

  • The screenplay is finely penned
  • The lead stars are impressive in their roles

What’s Not There?

  • A few jarring moments

Verdict

With a tight screenplay and neat performances, Heretic is a good action thriller to watch this weekend!
