Plot

A beautiful and gut-wrenching tale of love, conformity and tragedy, the movie explores the lives of Tim and John, a gay couple navigating life in the 70s with tragic circumstances that lie in wait for them.

Star Performance

The cast performances in this movie are phenomenal as. Ryan Corr and Craig Scott have undeniable chemistry and do justice to the love story of their real-life counterparts.

Analysis

Holding The Man is a beautiful coming-of-tale that explores an illicit relationship between two young men to follow in the years and beyond. It goes beyond a typical LGBTQ+ film that spreads awareness and really focuses on the natural and raw emotions that come with relationships that are subject to society's scrutiny- quiet, passionate love, hatred, stigma and tragedy. It's a phenomenal movie, with superb acting, costumes and an accurate backdrop. The music adds a unique, personal touch to the movie. It also tackles issues like AIDS and covered the tragic AIDS epidemic beautifully, in a way that preaches awareness and understanding at the same time. It is one of those grounded, queer movies that has a strong basis in reality (because it is based off an actual incident) and shows us that love transcends all worldly norms and values, and sheds all boundaries.

What’s There?

  • Beautiful and heartwarming storyline
  • Sheds light on important events
  • Flawless screenplay
  • Amazing cast performances

What’s Not There?

  • It is too dark and grounded in reality if you consider that it belongs to a romantic genre.

Verdict

Holding The Man is an emotional rollercoaster, at the very least. A quiet and powerfully inspiring story, the movie treats homosexuality with respect and validates all human relationships, regardless of society and it's rigid outlook on non-conformity. A truly heartwarming tale of love and tragedy, Holding The Man is a must-watch for all. Although it is much more serious and grounded in reality than your average whimsical romance drama, it will not fail to stir your senses and make you revel in the magic of love.
