Plot
The story is set in the Wood Creek area in Australia. Two traffic police officers were patrolling at midnight when a man with his car truck knowingly exceeded the speed limit. The two officers overtook the truck, Mike Taylor was the driver of the truck. They then insults Mike and gives him a ticket for over speeding. Seeing this Mike loses his control and he shoots one of the officers and brutally hits the other one and kills him too. He then puts dead bodies in their car and sets it on fire. Mike afterwards arrives at a camping area where two couples were setting their camp. He offers them a ride and suggests they come with him, when Rutger refuses, Mike kills him. Mike takes his wife Katarina and ties her up with intention to rape her.
At night when she comes to her senses, Katarina sees Mike cutting her husband's in pieces and feeding them to his dogs. She tries to run but Mike follows her with his truck. Then fortunately, Paul, an English traveller was passing by in his car and he saw Katarina standing along the road side. He suddenly pulled her in his car. Mike follows them and tries to shoot Paul. Instead of Paul, Katarina gets killed. Seeing this, Mike becomes furious and as Paul's car fuel goes low. He was exhausted and tired and tried to run but he could not. He then wakes up in Mike's dungeon, finding himself tied up. He plays a question and answer game with Paul about Australian history, each wrong answer will cost him a finger. Mike starts chopping Paul’s fingers and finding a good chance he takes up a hammer and hits Mike in his head.
Pual tries to run but he is unable to do so and hence Mike hits his head and leaves him on the roadside in his underpants with a message saying LOSER. He was then discovered by police men. During the investigation Paul went through some severe mental breakdown.
Star performance
The major role of Mike is played by John Jarratt. He uses his amazing acting skills to successfully portray Mike as a sadistic and ruthless character. With him the film would have been a failure. He portrays the character of Mike as a maniac with a blend of brutality and charisma. Another main character is Paul Hammersmith played by Ryan Corr. His character becomes one of the main targets of Mike's psychological disturbance. Ryan cunningly showed Paul as a victim full of fear and desperation who successfully makes it out of Mike's dungeon alive. Other actors like Shannon as Katarina, Philippe as Rutger played a minor role. However, their performances add emotional depth and endure a sense of pity and fear within viewers.
Analysis
Wolf Creek 2 is a story based on a tourist hunter, Mike who kills everyone who he encounters on wolf Creek. It is a disturbing movie. Mike's character is less relatable and sympathetic which makes him the centre of the story. Usually such stories give backdrop to the villain as well, however, here that is not present. It is not a horrific story so the genre is quite problematic. During the making of the movie, realism is lost. The only realistic part is when Mike ties up Paul to play a question answer game. Here his character is depicted as a sick sadist. Too much attention is given to his character, putting other characters in isolation. The plot of the story is predictable and hence makes it lose interest towards the ending.
Although the film is an intense thriller genre with several fantastic scenes. It had an unsettling tone as the script is packed with tension. The movie also had a problematic ending as it was not clear. There was no disclosure of how Paul came out on the road, what road is referred to there? Final 30 minutes were very different from the first part of Wolf Creek.
