INTRO
Jennifer Westfeldt, the director, writer and co-lead of the film brings a multi starrer romantic comedy defying the conventional norms of married life. What happened to the lead while taking the ‘road not taken’ is what is to find out in the film.
PLOT
Two single best friends, Jason and Julie, are further tight with two couples without any children. Within a span of four years, the couples bear kids, and this weighs heavily on their marriages. Seeing their friends’ matrimonial relationships suffer due to kids, Jason and Julie give more than just thought to an unusual idea- to have kids with each other and then look for their Mr. /Mrs. Right. Eventually, they give birth to Joe and then move on with their lives and date other people. While Julie’s feelings for Jason have been developing and suddenly dawn on her on her birthday, Jason reveals that he is not in the same place as her and in fact, is going to move in with his girlfriend. Will the two reunite? Will Joe have a complete family?
STAR PERFORMANCES
Adam Scott as Jason Fryman and Jennifer Westfeldt as Julie Keller, have successfully done justice portraying themselves to be independent, young and single friends having the maturity to do something as big as giving birth to a child as friends. Together, with their subtle acting, they prove to the viewers that it is very much possible to parent a child and at the same time lead lives as bachelors or spinsters catering to their needs of love and relationship from someone other than the one person they had a child with.
ANALYSIS
In the new generation, this film experiments with a practical approach to life keeping in mind some of the conventional norms regarding having a child at the right age or before ‘time runs out’. The experiment, however, leaves the audience with mixed reactions. On one hand, it seems unfair to the kid who is purposely raised without a married set of parents and on the other hand, to some the experiment comes off as a smart one.Â
