Plot
In Dead Rising: Watchtower (2015), the reporter Chase Carter (Jesse Metcalfe) is stuck inside a walled-off city full of zombies. He initially thinks the government’s Zombrex medication is preventing those infected from becoming undead, but all hell breaks loose when the drug fails and the outbreak is on. When Chase meets forces with Crystal (Meghan Ory), a tough survivor with a dark past, and Maggie (Virginia Madsen), a grieving mother, they take to the undead-filled streets to navigate a way out while seeking the truth of what went wrong with the medication. Outside the quarantine zone, the military, commanded by Gen. Lyons (Dennis Haysbert), takes equally brutal containment measures, prohibiting anyone from leaving. The authorities are calling Chase’s video footage of the outbreak misinformation as it starts to gain traction. The seasoned journalist Frank West (Rob Riggle) providing cynical commentary, suggests a grander conspiracy afoot. The Zombrex failure was intentional? As Chase and his team reach what they think is their only exit, evidence arises that proves otherwise. But were they all part of a much larger experiment? As the clock winds down and the infected close in, Chase faces the ultimate dilemma — run and live, or reveal the truth and lose it all?
Star Performance
A mix of action, horror, and humor, Dead Rising: Watchtower (2015) stars Jesse Metcalfe as Chase Carter, a brash but flawed reporter. His work lends the role energy, and Meghan Ory and Virginia Madsen provide emotional heft and hardiness. Rob Riggle’s dismal take on Frank West gives the show a much needed comic relief while remaining faithful to the video game’s satirical tone. Director Zach Lipovsky keeps the pace lively — the zombie mayhem is constantly balanced with some scares. Cinematography is designed to that gritty, apocalyptic end, and the guts-and-gore practical effects help the entertainment factor, despite a boilerplate plot.
Analysis
Although Dead Rising: Watchtower (2015) does its best to evoke the bombast of its video game source material, it sadly can't translate it to the silver screen especially well. Director Zach Lipovsky whips up a fast-moving zombie-genre potboiler with the occasional snicker, but it never clicks in its entirety due to some clunky pacing and a too-familiar trajectory. Jesse Metcalfe makes a convincing lead man as the determined journalist, while Rob Riggle adds comic energy as Frank West but feels underused in the role. The film’s practical effects and fun zombie kills are a standout, harkening back to the spirit of the game. But the uneven tone — juggling horror, satire and action — holds it back from the heights of any one. Though the film touches on themes of government corruption and media manipulation, it also fails to develop those ideas beyond clichéd situational banality. Dead Rising: Watchtower is a fun ride for fans of the undead, but it lacks an essence of entertainment value that would make for a memorable or fresh takeaway from the film.

Verdict
Dead Rising: Watchtower (2015) is a frenetic zombie action movie that retains the game’s madcap ethos, featuring inventive deaths and gallows humor. Jesse Metcalfe is good in the lead role and Rob Riggle adds comic relief. But [the film] is let down by a predictable plot, erratic tone and paper-thin exposition that make it an enjoyable but forgettable adaptation.
