Mollywood has made a mark for itself this year. While most of the other domains, including Bollywood, are struggling to produce quality films, their Malayalam counterparts have produced not one, but four commercial successes in a single month, including ‘Anweshippin Kandethum’, ‘Premalu’, ‘Bramayugam’, and ‘Manjummel Boys’.
However, not many know that this success also compelled a trade analyst to quietly remove his derogatory post about Malayalam cinema. A couple of weeks ago, Tamil trade analyst Karthik Ravi Varma took potshots at Mollywood, writing in his article that the industry is ‘all gas and no substance’.
This article/post was not taken kindly by Malayalam fans, who demanded that he apologize. However, little did anyone realize that karma has its way of a response. The post was made the same day ‘Manjummel Boys’ hit the silver screens.
Interestingly, the very domain that Karthik belonged to struggled to deliver even a basic average grosser, forget matching up to the success of the Malayalam film industry. Not only that, ‘Manjummel Boys’ also hit the jackpot in the Tamil circuits, earning more than 15 crores from just the dubbed version. That is karma in a nutshell.
