Karnataka High Court Halts Price Cap On Movie Tickets

Karnataka High Court isn’t too impressed with the government move on movie tickets.

In a significant judgment, the High Court struck down the government order, which restricted the price of movie tickets to not more than Rs. 200. This was passed by Siddaramaiah, the current CM of Karnataka in a bid to save the sagging fortunes of Sandalwood.

However, many production companies in Karnataka, including Hombale Films objected to the decision. They argued that the government didn’t take into account the investments behind big budget movies, doing more harm than good for the movies. With the exception of Raj B Shetty’s Su from So, most of the Kannada movies didn’t benefit from the government order either.

The Karnataka High Court agreed with their views and removed the price cap on the tickets. It would be interesting to see if upcoming movies like Rishab Shetty’s Kantara : Chapter 1 resort to blockbuster pricing to make their movie successful or not.
