1. Shaheed-E-Mohabbat Boota Singh
‘Shaheed-E-Mohabbat Boota Singh’ is a 1999 Punjabi Film based on the real-life love story of Zainab and Boota Singh. The movie’s theme revolves around the partition period when Boota Singh rescues Zainab from local mobs, & later, the two fall in love. The film is directed by Manoj Punj, with Gurdas Mann and Divya Dutta playing the lead roles. The movie won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Punjabi at the 46th National Film Awards.
2. Punjab 1984
‘Punjab 1984’ is a 2014 Punjabi language film directed by Anurag Singh. The film is about the unrest in Punjab during 1984. It also shows the impact of those horrific days on the lives of the people of Punjab. The movie showcases the story of a mother and her missing son. The film starring Kirron Kher, Diljit Dosanjh, and Sonam Bajwa is one of the classic works of Punjabi Cinema. The movie won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Punjabi at the 62nd National Film Awards.
3. Main Maa Punjab Dee
‘Main Maa Punjab Dee’ is a 1988 Punjabi film written and directed by Balwant Dullat. The film starred Dara Singh, Bhagwant Mann, Shavinder Mahal, and many others. The film conveys a social message by representing a suffering mother who experiences the ordeal created by her sons, discovers her artistic capacity, and rehabilitates herself. The movie won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Punjabi at the 45th National Film Awards.
4. Rabb Da Radio 2
‘Rabb Da Radio 2’ is a 2019 Punjabi Film and a sequel to Rabb Da Radio (2017). The film stars Tarsem Jassar, Simi Chahal, & others. Sharan Art is the director of the film. It is a Punjabi family drama where the extended family of a newly married man split their ways. The whole thing makes that man upset. He ends up making the family come together. The movie won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Punjabi at the 67th NFA.
5. Waris Shah: Ishq Daa Waaris
The next movie is ‘Waris Shah: Ishq Daa Waaris’. The movie was directed by Manoj Punj and released in 2006. The movie stars Gurdas Maan, Juhi Chawla & Divya Dutta in lead roles. The film’s narrative revolves around the life of the renowned poet Waris Shah during the period when he wrote the poem ‘Heer’. The movie got the 54th NFA for Best Feature Film in Punjabi.
‘Harjeeta’ is a 2018 Punjabi language film directed by Vijay Kumar Arora. The movie stars Ammy Virk, Pankaj Tripathi, and Sawan Rupowali. The movie is a documentary about Indian hockey player Harjeet Singh Tuli, who captained the Indian team at the 2016 Men’s Hockey Junior World Cup. The movie shows his struggles and how he fulfiled his dreams. The movie won the 66th NFA for Best Feature Film in Punjabi.
‘Baghi’ is a Punjabi film released in 2006 and directed by Sukhminder Dhanjal. The film’s star cast includes Om Puri, Girija Shankar, and Paramveer Singh. It is a melodic love story of two love birds, but Caste and Creed stand in their paths. But through thick and thin, the two get married in the end. The Punjab government banned the film because of a revolt by scheduled caste groups. The film got the National Award for Best Punjabi Film in 2007.
8. Nabar: A Rebel With A Cause
‘Nabar: A Rebel with a Cause’ is another example of Punjabi Cinema. Rajeev Sharma was the director of the film that was released in 2013. Rana Ranbir, Hardeep Gill, Ashish Duggal & many others played the lead role in the film. The plot revolves around six different personalities who belong to diverse backgrounds and live very different lives with dreams in their eyes. They go through hardships to achieve them.
9. Des Hoyaa Pardes
‘Des Hoyaa Pardes’ is another masterpiece by Punjabi Cinema, released in 2004. Directed by Manoj Punj, the movie showcased Gurdas Maan, Juhi Chawla, Divya Dutta, Anup Soni, and many others as the star cast. The other name for this movie is ‘Political Asylum.’ The film depicts the love story of two love birds during the insurgency in Punjab in 1984. The lead role undergoes many hardships to live in his country, which grows aggressive political settings after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s death. The movie won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Punjabi at the 52nd NFA.
10. Anhe Ghore Da Daan
Another fine example of Punjabi Cinema is ‘Anhe Ghore Da Daan’ or ‘Alms for a Blind Horse’. Gurvinder Singh directed the film in 2011. The movie is based on Gurdial Singh’s novel of the same title. The movie is starring Samuel John, Kul Sidhu, and Gurpreet Bhangu. The movie’s theme revolves around the hardships and sad state of farmers in Punjab, the rural working class, and the landlords. The movie took home the NFA of Best Feature Film in Punjabi in 2011. There are a few more fine works of Punjabi Cinema that won the National Film Awards for their performances.
